On November 20, 2014, our sweet boy Ezra was born. He arrived in a big way weighing 10lbs 15oz and perfectly healthy. Our sweet boy brought so much joy to our family we didn’t know was missing. Ezra was adored by us all and such a relaxed baby. He loved watching all the activity of his brother and sisters. Quite frankly, he looked bored when they were gone and it was just him.
During the 15 months of Ezra’s life, we were just beginning to see what he loved. We know, without a shadow of a doubt, that he LOVED to eat. Loved it. He loved music, dancing, balls, books, being rocked and playing with his siblings. Ezra gave lots of hugs and kisses. He would cup his sweet hands on your cheeks and give you a big-open-mouth-full-slobber-kiss.
March 1st, 2016, was a day like any other. Toys were everywhere as the boys built towers and crashed them to the ground. Squeals of laughter followed as they did it again and again. There was also eating. Lots of eating! Ezra went down for his late morning nap around 11:30 am. While he slept, we prepared to go out to a late lunch after Ezra’s nap. I remember thinking how perfect this day was going. I went to go wake him up and he had died in his sleep. Our world turned upside down that day. Completely upside down. The autopsy results revealed no cause of death. He was a completely healthy little boy that went down for a nap on Earth and woke up in Heaven. There were so many questions that day and no answers.
Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is the sudden and unexpected death of a child 12 months and older which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation is conducted. This must include; examination of the death scene, performance of a complete autopsy, and a review of the child and family's medical history. SUDC is a catergory of death that currently eludes our scientific understanding today.
